Writing as you would solve a material balance.
At first I wasn't thrilled to discover there was another mandatory writing class I had to check off my list before graduation, but I was pleasantly surprised with what Lisa Owen had in store. She presented an approach to writing that paralleled problem solving strategies I was learning simultaneously in my Chemical Engineering class, which made it much more enjoyable and easier for me to communicate. Starting by analyzing your rhetorical situation and who you are communicating too, move to past situations to draw on genre as a basis on how to communicate, follow a set of design guidelines, and finally take the information you are trying to communicate and manipulate it to follow those criteria. Definitely skills I will use throughout the rest of my life.
