I got introduced to climbing my freshman year and it quickly became my go to recreational activity, and at the beginning of my second year at UW, some friends on the UW Climbing Team convinced me to join. Definitely one of the best decisions I made at college. The Climbing Team offers a great way to keep in shape as well as connect you with an incredible group of people also passionate about the sport. Every Monday and Thursday night from 8:00 to 10:00pm a couple of my friends and I bike down to the IMA for practice, which is always fun, but ends in misery as every practice ends with an ab workout that leaves everyone groaning in pain. But don't get me wrong - the misery during abs is probably one of most fun parts of practice.
We compete in the NC3 Climbing Circuit with other schools like Whitman, University of Idaho, and Portland State, and at competitions we get the amazing opportunity of socializing with all these other students. So far my best finish at a climbing competition was 14th overall in the men's category, at the University of Idaho.
Currently my favorite outdoor route has been a 4 pitch 5.8 in Joshua Tree National Park that I climbed with my cousins over Winter Break, although I'm discovering hidden gems all around Washington as I get into outdoor climbing more!
