Welcome to the big leagues.
My first glimpse into what life as an engineer really would look like. I wouldn't say I had a fantasy version of what the engineering lifestyle was, but I'm not sure I was expecting what I experienced in this class.
To make things clear: I really enjoyed my first class in my major. I met an amazing group of people, and the 70 of us in our cohort I'm sure I can turn to at any point for help throughout our learning process and our development of engineering skills.
It was in this class that I first saw how what I am learning in school can be applied to real world problems. Up until this point, although everything I have been learning has been interesting, there were often times that I failed to see how I would use the knowledge or skill ever again. Professor Holt showed me how to find engineering problems that the real world faces, not an odd made up situation out of a textbook involving an excessive number of watermelons. We learned about real chemical production processes, analyzed lifetime efficacy of paper vs. plastic bags on a basis of energy consumption, and all had hammered home how to efficiently use excel, which is an incredibly valuable tool as I've come to realize. I've used the program for a wide variety of things from planning out trips to figuring out how to split rent on a house with the 7 people I'm living with next year.
This class made me excited to be an engineer. I can finally see how problems are identified, studied, and solved in an efficient and practical manner, and I can't wait to use what I have learned, and will learn in my future chemical engineering classes to help push renewable energies to new heights.
